CLUB TOURNAMENT RULES by Director of Play Stan Yee 11/03/10
I wish to remind Club members of the Club tournament rules, especially after the problems I encountered during the Club
Championship last year when I was waiting for several results from games that had not been played when scheduled. These
rules apply to standard time control Club tournaments, with rules 2.(a) and 3.(a) applying to rapid tournaments.
1. If a tournament game cannot be played on Club night, then the player who is unable to attend defaults the game.
2. If a player defaults two consecutive games in the same tournament, that player is automatically withdrawn from the
tournament.
2.(a) In rapid tournaments a "no show" means automatic default for the rest of the tournament because there are
normally two rounds per night.
3. The exception is when both players agree to play the game on another night, in which case the player unable to attend on
Club night must obtain permission from the Director of Play on the prior Club night before rescheduling the game, and the
game must be played BEFORE it is scheduled to be played, NOT after. Therefore the Director of Play will not be waiting for
any results between rounds or at the end of the tournament. Both original scoresheets, signed by both players, MUST be
submitted to the Director of Play by the following Tuesday, which is the day that the game was scheduled to be played. It is
only fair that the other players in the tournament know the outcome of your game. The Director of Play will NOT be giving
permission to play any games after the scheduled date, and any outstanding games on the scheduled date will be defaulted by
the player unable to attend on Club night.
3.(a) In rapid tournaments, because there are normally two rounds per night, this exception can apply for rounds 3, 5 or 7
only and the player not able to attend the first round of the Tuesday night MUST attend the second round of the same Tuesday
night, i.e. turns up before 9.15 p.m., and both original scoresheets whether complete or not, signed by both players, MUST
be submitted to the Director of Play by the following Tuesday, which is the day that the game was scheduled to be played.
4. If there is no agreement to play the game on another night, then the player unable to attend on Club night automatically
loses by default. Remember, the player who is able to attend on Club night does not have to agree. I only introduced this
arrangement as we are a small friendly Club, and should try to accommodate everyone if we can. After all, we would prefer to
play chess than to get the point by default.
5. The exception to this arrangement is if your opponent is the Director of Play, who is also playing in the tournament, in
which case the game MUST be played on Club night, otherwise the player unable to attend on Club night automatically loses by
default. This is because the Director of Play as a player should not be disavantaged by being asked to set aside two nights
in the week for chess, as he has to turn up on Club nights anyway.
6. If such a game must be rescheduled between an adult and a minor (under the age of 18), then that game MUST take place at
the minor's parents home, under parental supervision. Under no circumstances is the game to be played in the adult's home.
7. Remember, this arrangement is at the discretion of the Director of Play, and has worked in the past without a Disputes
Committee present as on Club nights. If there are any problems or unresolved disputes then the Director of Play reserves the
right to cancel this arrangement, so that the player unable to attend on Club night automatically defaults the game.
8. The Director of Play has no discretion to allow games to be played other than on Club night for Grand Prix tournaments.
Therefore all games from the Fairhurst Pawn and Sutton Rapid must be played on Club night.
