Well done to North Shore, again retaining the Jenkins Trophy. But we are getting better ... Thank
goodness for our Juniors! We breed them young, we breed them tough at Howick-Pakuranga. Some very
interesting games, but the top board stood out, between Martin Dreyer and Ralph Hart. It started
out as a Queens Gambit Accepted, then turned Slav(ish), then Semi-Slav(ish), then looked like a
Sicilian Najdorf with possible tactics on e6, b5 and d5. Except the poor Slav Bishop was stranded
on h5, but a Sicilian type position demanded that it be somewhere guarding the Queenside. The
White pawn was on e3 instead of e4, but Ralph Hart didn't seem to mind, and obviously saw the
similarities in the different positions. Confused? Click "Games", play through the game and you
will see. This is one of those games where you say "Where on earth did I go wrong?" After 6.Bg5?!
Black actually has the better position =+(0.29) Depth 16. White may appear to look good on the
board, but Mr Fritz says Black is definitely better. So, what happened? All games are also posted
as a "pgn" file.

Here is what happened in the final "A" Grade Interclub match vs Papatoetoe, Sunday 29th June.
Martin Dreyer and Bob Gibbons agreed a draw after 10 moves. Craig Blaxall beat Ed Tanoi after Ed
sac'ed the exchange and didn't choose the best follow up. Richard Taylor managed to beat Chris Dale
in a complex tactical duel. Paul Morten lost to Philip Makkattu when he blundered his Queen.
Tony Booth lost a piece in the opening to Phillip Logo and the game soon followed. Peter Morten
had a cracker of a position against Hans Gao, but the senior member of the Morten clan was mated
on his back rank. So the final score was Howick-Pakuranga 2.5 vs Papatoetoe 3.5. Review by

The result of our Interclub match vs North Shore ended with the North Shore winning 4.5 - 1.5. On
board 1 Dreyer and Garbett agreed a draw after 8 moves. On board 2 Craig Blaxall and Mark Le Brocq
drew after fighting it out to a drawn rook and pawn ending without either side getting much of an
advantage. Board 3 saw Richard Taylor play a complicated game vs Jeffrey McCrone in which Taylor
had good chances, but he took a poisoned pawn and lost the game. Paul Morten was under pressure
from Peter Stuart almost from the word go and lost a bishop ending a pawn down. Tony Booth lost a
piece and the game to Fuatai Fuatai, who was playing for North Shore. Edward Huang's game vs
Helen Milligan was the last game finished and ended in draw in an even position. Review by

Here is what happened in the Interclub. Our top board Martin Dreyer drew with Bob Smith because
after a tactical duel Martin Dreyer could force a perpetual check. On board 2 Paul Spiller drew
with Viv Smith. They agreed a draw with plenty of play left because Spiller was running low on
time, with about 2 minutes left. On board 3 Craig Blaxall's opponent, John O'Connor, had Craig's
King in a mating net but managed to mate O'Connor's king first! Richard Taylor lost to his
opponent after overlooking a tactic. Tony Booth beat Nicole Tsoi. Edward Huang's game was the
first finished, he thrashed his opponent. So over all we won against Waitakere 4:2. Review by

21st May 2008 Primary Schools Tournament, teams of 4. 28th May 2008 Intermediate
Schools Tournament, teams of 4. Held at Elm Park School. Seven round Swiss, time
control approx. 30 mins (achieved by issuing boards still playing with 5 mins.
Each timer set about 20 mins from starting).
